The GLASTONBURY DEMOCRATIC TEAM 2005

Town Council: Michael Collins, Tom Kehoe, Patricia Saddlemire, Keith Shaw, Caroline Treiss, Barbara Wagner

Board of Education: Angela Phelan, Elizabeth Rogan

Michael Collins
Town Council

I am an attorney who has dedicated my entire career to addressing municipal issues. I currently practice with the law firm of Halloran & Sage located in Hartford, where I concentrate my practice on the defense of municipal liability matters. Prior to entering the private sector, I was a full time city attorney in the City of Hartford Corporation Counsel's Office for 17 years, including 8 years as Deputy
Corporation Counsel. While serving in that capacity, I had the opportunity to address all types of issues that a municipality is faced with, from administration to zoning.

My involvement in representing the City of Hartford and other municipalities has given me a unique opportunity to witness and advise as to what works and what does not work in tackling the challenges that local governments face today. I will bring that experience to the Town Council and help the Town of Glastonbury in taking on those challenges and making the most of its opportunities to benefit its citizens.

I also served as a Justice of the Peace in the City of Hartford for more than 20 years, and was a member of Mayor Mike Peters' Task Force regarding real property revaluation. I am a member of the Irish American Home Society, where I serve on the Board of Directors and was a previous Vice President.

I am married and have a daughter, who is attending kindergarten.

Tom Kehoe
Town Council

I am honored to have the opportunity to seek reelection to the Glastonbury Town Council in an effort to better serve my community. I believe I have made significant contributions to the council and have been proactive in promoting excellence in education, fiscal responsibility, and preservation of open space.

I greatly appreciate Glastonbury as a place to live and raise a family. I cherish its agricultural and river front heritage while recognizing it is undergoing significant change and growth. I wish to play a part
in how that occurs by using my legal talents in litigation management, domestic, international and government contracting and negotiation to benefit the town and will do so in a fiscally responsible manner. I will work to keep Glastonbury in the forefront of outstanding Connecticut towns.

Angela Phelan
Board of Education

I have lived in Glastonbury for the past forty years and have seen
four of my children progress from kindergarten through high school
in our town. Now, my grandchildren are preparing to enter into our
school system. This has afforded me the opportunity to experience,
first hand, the development of the Glastonbury School System into
one of the best educational programs in the state. I am running for
the Board of Education to insure that Glastonbury continues to
develop the best programs and approaches to the education of our
future leaders and citizens.

I have a background of twenty-seven years with the Town of
Manchester School System, serving as a Guidance Counselor.
Twelve of those years were spent at the middle school level, where I
was appointed Coordinator of Guidance and Special Education
Services. The remaining fifteen years were spent at the high school
level where I helped to develop a state and nationally-recognized
career development program. This program was a keynote
presentation at two national education conferences by myself and
another educator.

One of my most cherished honors was being named “Connecticut
School Counselor of the Year.” My background also includes working
part-time as a Crisis Counselor in the Emergency Department at
Manchester Hospital, where I have worked with many youths in crisis.

Locally, I have served on the Fine Arts Council and now serve on the
Board of the Youth Services Commission. I feel my experience and background in education, if elected to the Board of Education, will insure that Glastonbury continues to provide quality educational experiences for our children.

Elizabeth Rogan
Board of Education

I am running for the Board of Education because I believe in quality public education and fiscal responsibility. Today's schoolchildren are tomorrow's leaders; we owe it to our town, our state and our nation to provide the best education possible to all the children in our town, to ensure a prosperous future for our country.

I understand the value of quality public education, having attended public elementary and secondary schools growing up. Because of the excellent public schooling I received, I was able to attend college at the University of Chicago, AB 1981, and Columbia University School of Law, JD 1985.

I bring to my candidacy exceptional educational credentials. I bring, as well, a record of community service and leadership in Glastonbury--at Eastbury School, in Glastonbury Girl Scouts and other civic organizations, and as a commissioner on both the Town
Plan and Zoning Commission and Youth and Family Services Commission.

Finally, I bring a diverse life experience, having worked as a high-profile public interest attorney and small business owner for over a decade before settling in Glastonbury to raise my family. Like you, I care deeply about our town and our town's children. With your support, I will work hard to secure for them the best opportunities for their future. Those opportunities begin with a high quality and well run public school system.

Patricia Saddlemire
Town Council

Pat Saddlemire has been a very active member of the community since coming to Glastonbury. She has been a member of the Glastonbury Board of Education, the Glastonbury Democratic Town Committee, the Capitol Region Education Council in Hartford, and the Evergreen Garden Club. Professionally, Pat was a teacher, counselor, principal, assistant superintendent, university professor and education consultant in the U.S. and in ten countries throughout the world. Her husband, Richard, is the School Superintendent for the Columbia Public School District in Columbia, Connecticut. They have three daughters: Christina and Catherine (New York City) and Carlyn (Glastonbury).

Pat strongly believes that community leaders must work together to achieve town goals. There is a delicate balance between being fiscally responsible to taxpayers and providing excellence in Education and Town services. Both are important. Since all funding has limitations, Town Council members must look at creative options to resolve current and future issues. If you have issues or concerns you would like to discuss, do not hesitate to contact me.

Keith Shaw
Town Council

My name is Keith Shaw and I am running for a seat on the Town Council. Professionally, I am an attorney with a law practice in Wethersfield, CT. I have previously served as a member of the Zoning Board of Appeals and Charter Revision Committee in Cromwell, CT. I currently serve on the Board of Directors of the Connecticut Attorney Title Insurance Company (CATIC), Vested Technologies, Inc., Connecticut Friends for ALS Research, and the Kennebunk Beach Improvement Association. I have been a resident of Glastonbury for the past eighteen years with my wife and three children. I have been a Justice of the Peace in Glastonbury for the past five years and have been active in Junior Little League and basketball as an assistant
coach.

Carolyn Treiss
Town Council

EDUCATION: Ensure that Glastonbury's Public School System remains one of the finest in the state.

I was fortunate to receive a top notch education in the Glastonbury Public School system, and if elected, I will work to ensure that my son and all of Glastonbury's children have an even better education than I had.

FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY: Meet the needs of our residents; limit the growth of taxes and control our spending in a responsible manner.

I understand the price of the high quality of life here in Glastonbury. I also understand what that price means for individual families like my own. If elected, I will ensure that your tax dollars are spent wisely and conservatively, while meeting the most important needs of all of our residents.

QUALITY OF LIFE: Protect open space and preserve Glastonbury's historic character.

I returned to Glastonbury, the town of my youth and of my family, because of the town's beauty, its rich history and the quality of life here. These are all things that must be preserved, and if elected, I will ensure that they are.
